Process Paper
My topic for this project is the invention of mills and how they changed the way products were manufactured in the America. I chose this because I was interested in the industrial revolution, which was greatly affected by the textile mills.
When I started researching i focused on the just general industrial revolution. I started by scanning through The Industrial Revolution by James Corrick. After getting a good sense of what it was. I moved more into detailed sources so i could try to narrow my topic down. I found The Dawn of Innovation by Charles Morris. where I was able to find details on the various of the inventions. It helped me greatly and made me steer towards the inventions of the industrial revolution. From there, I was able to find much more credible sources, including articles by historians . I hit a wall when i was looking for primary sources but finally had great success looking through college websites and finding some articles written by professors. I successfully found a good primary source. It was a journal written by the inventor of the power loom which led me to narrow my search down to textiles. I then ended up going back to my old sources and found more information about the textile industry. After searching for more primary sources I came up dry. I only found irrelevant journals and pictures. After searching for primary sources I steered toward the various inventions during the industrial revolution that had an effect on the textile mills. I first started at the JSTOR database and had great successful. It was my first using the database and was extremely impressed. It seemed to give me an endless amount of resources and from those I was able to pick out a select few that were able to exceptionally impressive which included a highly detailed journal containing the history of the textile mills in the 18th century by Historian named Shirley Abbott. I felt satisfied after finding what i needed from JSTOR to complete my research.
Through my various hours of research, I have been able to forge a thesis statement for my topic: During the early 18th century, other countries began surpassing America’s economical status, but when the textile mills were introduced, America began to transform. Gradually, products evolved from being manufactured one by one to being mass produced. Primarily, the power loom, the spinning jennys, ,and the sewing were significant contributions to the Industrial Revolution; resulting in an economic turning point in America.
